Spring Song (30 April 2021)

“All that wander are not lost.”[*]
“The woods are free to roam.”
From trunkless trees to evenbreeze,
true cypers flow in the loam.                            1

Sprouting vines and yellow Coltsfeet
give to wanderers their route.
Paths that glisten in the Moonlight
call to walkers in delight.                                      2

Over dell and down through hillsides
groots and roots, tipple and frost
grant us visions in our ley-strides
weaving fey-lines for the lost.                              3

Crocuses and daffodils shine
for all those sauntering clear_
Each flower petal like blue wine
invigorating spirits near.                                      4

And when the solemn night rains fall
fissures open; owls call—
Sweet life fills the cracks of power,
sending electric shocks through all!                   5

Tulips and Daffodils spring up
calling true Faery Bells
into blossom, in haunted woods_
their doors in trunks ajar.                                   6

May Apples push up from below;
their question is to show
the verdant power of the Earth
as Spring Songs gloam their worth.                  7

Until Black Snakeroots show their heads
Spring is sung in wildwoods
near and far, and in the close reach_
                of every earthen door!                        8
So mote it be.

[*] Slightly transposed reference to the line from Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, “Not all those who wander are lost.”

Vernal Dream (1 April 2021)

I want to dream of the Earth again,
of root and bark and cloud and sky—
I want to get my fingers dirty
and let Imagination fly!
I want to touch the source of my dreams_
to smell, taste, hear; to use the eye
in ways that open us to wonder—
feeling free_
to wander beneath the sky.
